The flight attendant added “voce fala ingles?” (you speak English?) and “onde esta a casa de banho?” (where is the bathroom?) to my repertoire as I flew through the night to Lisbon. My journey with the Portuguese language had just begun, and it was a delightful adventure filled with discovery.

Upon landing, the vibrant culture of Portugal enveloped me. The streets of Lisbon were alive with the sounds of Fado music, the aroma of fresh pastries, and the warm smiles of locals. Each interaction was an opportunity to practice my newly acquired phrases, and I quickly learned that the Portuguese were not only patient but also eager to share their language and culture with visitors.

As I wandered through the historic neighborhoods, I marveled at the stunning architecture, from the intricate azulejos (ceramic tiles) that adorned buildings to the majestic cathedrals that stood as testaments to the country’s rich history. The Alfama district, with its narrow winding streets, was a particular favorite of mine. Here, I found cozy cafes where I could sip on bica (espresso) while listening to the soulful strains of Fado echoing through the alleyways.

Food was another integral part of my experience. I indulged in pastéis de nata (custard tarts) that melted in my mouth and bacalhau à brás (codfish) that was prepared to perfection. Each meal was a celebration of flavors, and I often found myself asking locals for recommendations, practicing my Portuguese along the way. The warmth of the Portuguese people made every dining experience feel like a gathering of friends.

My travels took me beyond Lisbon to the enchanting city of Porto, where the Douro River flows gracefully through the heart of the city. Here, I explored the famous wine cellars, learning about the production of port wine while enjoying tastings that showcased the region’s unique offerings. The scenic views from the Dom Luís I Bridge were breathtaking, and I couldn’t help but capture the moment with my camera, eager to share my experiences with friends back home.

Throughout my journey, I discovered that language is more than just words; it’s a bridge that connects people. Each phrase I learned opened doors to new friendships and deeper understanding. The Portuguese language, with its melodic tones and expressive nuances, became a part of my travel narrative, enriching my experiences in ways I had never anticipated.

Reflecting on my time in Portugal, I realize that my initial phrases were just the beginning. The language, the culture, and the people left an indelible mark on my heart. My adventures in Portugal ignited a passion for language learning that continues to this day, reminding me that every journey is an opportunity to connect, explore, and grow.

Matyas Rehak / Shutterstock.com “Bom dia” (good day) … “boa tarde” (good afternoon) … “boa noite” (good night) were the first Portuguese phrases I learned before my inaugural visit to Portugal in 1979.
