According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, sales of heavy trucks—those exceeding 14,000 pounds in gross vehicle weight—have plummeted to levels not seen in four years. In August, sales were down more than 15% compared to the previous year and 21% compared to August 2023.

Economists and investors have long viewed the sales of these vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, as a leading economic indicator. This is largely because heavy trucks are essential to American manufacturing and construction. An increase in truck sales often signals a rise in industrial activity, while a decline can suggest economic contraction, historically preceding recessions.

Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, expressed concern over the recent downturn in heavy truck sales, which began in 2023. In a note to clients, he highlighted the correlation between falling sales and economic recessions. For instance, during the Global Financial Crisis of the late 2000s, heavy truck sales dropped by more than 67% from a peak in 2006 to mid-2009. Similarly, sales fell around 50% from a high in late 1999 to a low in late 2002, coinciding with the dot-com bubble’s impact on the economy.

However, economists caution that this trend is not always a foolproof indicator of impending recessions. As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the workforce, some experts are questioning whether the current decline in truck sales reflects a broader economic shift rather than a straightforward downturn. Paul Hickey, co-founder of Bespoke Investment Group, noted in a correspondence with CNBC that the weakness in truck sales indeed points to a slowdown in the manufacturing sector. Yet, he emphasized that the overall economy continues to grow, suggesting a transformation towards service-oriented and digital sectors rather than traditional manufacturing.

Hickey referred to this phenomenon as the “bricks to clicks” transition in the U.S. economy, highlighting the shift from industrial roles—often associated with physical goods—to technology-driven sectors linked to the internet. “Falling sales are often a recession indicator,” he stated, “but the key word is often.” Despite the ongoing technological transformation, heavy truck sales had rebounded to near pre-pandemic levels following a dip during the pandemic. Therefore, the recent decline in sales this year must be examined in the context of the broader economic landscape.

Investors are left to ponder whether this downturn is merely a slowdown or indicative of a more significant economic issue. As the situation unfolds, the implications of these declining sales will become clearer, potentially shaping economic policies and investment strategies in the near future.

Recent data tracking the sales volume of large trucks in the U.S. has raised alarms regarding the current state of the economy.
